Tattoo At Sea: My Virgin Voyages Tattoo Experience

— Come be adventurous!

Ahoy, sailors! I recently traveled with Virgin Voyages and learned so much about traveling with the company that sets them apart from the rest.

My sister wanted to celebrate her 35th birthday in style, so our family booked a trip on the Virgin Voyages ship, the Scarlet Lady. We have been avid cruisers for years, but with covid and lockdown, we took a 2-year hiatus, so we were more than excited to get back out on the water.

Leading up to our vacation, we researched all there is to do, on and off board, when cruising with Virgin Voyages. There are plenty of bars on board, each ship with its unique vibe and creative lists of cocktails/mocktails. Try worldly cuisines at the best restaurants at sea. Plenty of activities and classes for all ages (well, those 18 and up, of course, because this ship is kids-free!). And don’t worry about waking up early to snag seats, there’s great seating options all around the ship whether you’re seeking sun or shade!

What is most impressive and piqued my family’s interest was finding out that we could get tattoos and piercings on board at Squid Ink, the world’s first tattoo studio on the ocean. With all of us in a celebratory mood we decided to book our tattoo appointments as soon as we embarked and the shop opened. The process for booking is easy. First you meet with an artist and discuss your ideas, what are you looking to get, size of the piece, and where. These artists can work with you to create custom artwork or use a design you already have. Next is to set the appointment, definitely book right away because spots fill up, then you’re set!

As this would be my first tattoo, I was understandably a bit nervous, but the nerves soon faded, and it turned out to be an awesome experience and an even better memory shared with my family. Our artist, Andres Corzo, owner of Stamp Tattoo Company in South Florida, took the best care of us from start to finish. He created a fun environment and helped bring our ideas to life. During the time I spent in the Squid Ink studio I saw other sailors get their tattoos done and share stories about how this is their second or third tattoo they have gotten on a Virgin Voyages cruise. Virgin has created something really special here.

I have looked at my tattoo everyday since getting it and am filled with joy and I guarantee that is in part by Virgin Voyages’ Squid Ink studio and the wonderful artists who join them on this adventure.

I plan to sail Virgin again as well as book a tattoo appointment next time I am on board. I not only hope but encourage you to check this experience of your bucket list! If I have encouraged you to explore this experience on board, check out the Virgin Voyages website for more information!
